noise, a celebratory loudness. A combination of joie de vivre and vibrant energy.
What is it about being on a stage that makes you come alive?
That brightness, that passion, that visceral suckerpunch of excitement. The moment your heart is caught in your throat, when you look around the stage and at the people surrounding you.
They’re your competitors, your sisters. You respect them as much as you want to be them. That envy, that love, that I-wouldn’t-want-to-be-here-with-anyone-else warmth.
It’s something special, something that we share — a gift, maybe, from the women who came before us. Our mothers, their mothers, and back until we can’t remember. We dance for them — we dance for each other — because we know we have something here worth celebrating.
D.C. Bhangra Crew
D.C. Bhangra Crew (DCBC) is an all-women’s bhangra team established in 2008. For the past decade, we have represented the D.C. metropolitan area in competitions across the country and performances in our hometown.
For some of us, this team has taught discipline — how to make a space for bhangra outside of the university environment, to push through a hard practice after a long day’s work. For others, it’s been about sisterhood — the first all-women’s team we danced on. More than anything, though, we’ve learned about toughness. About what it means to leave everything on that stage, about uphill battles being worth fighting.
That’s what brought us to RAUNAQ.
